GAT®: Get Aedes Trapped!
The Gravid Aedes Trap (GAT®) is a passive mosquito trap specifically designed to target female Aedes mosquitoes seeking sites to lay their eggs. Developed through collaborations between the Federal University of Minas Gerais in Brazil (UFMG) and James Cook University (JCU) in Australia, the GAT® trap offers an insecticide-free method for vector surveillance and population reduction.
The GAT® also enables the capture of adult female mosquitoes in optimal condition for molecular analysis to detect arboviruses, allowing early warning of potential human cases up to four weeks in advance, depending on local context and sampling frequency.
Innovation that safeguards health, preserves infrastructure, and enhances urban well-being!
Validated by WHO:
The World Health Organization (WHO) has acknowledged the relevance of the device currently under study, highlighting it as a promising technical-scientific tool in the fight against Aedes spp. This reference appears in the report “Efficacy-Testing of Traps for Control of Aedes spp. Mosquito Vectors” (WHO/CDS/NTD/VEM/2018.06), which establishes rigorous guidelines for evaluating the effectiveness of traps in vector control. The WHO document validates the potential of the device as an effective tool within the context of surveillance and vector control, providing technical support for its application in public health programs.
Designed to attract and capture pregnant Aedes aegypti without the use of insecticides, GAT® traps offer an eco-friendly and effective solution for vector control. Their compatibility with autodissemination systems (EDL) makes them ideal for integrated mosquito management in both urban and rural environments.
Selective Capture: Targets gravid (pregnant) female Aedes aegypti mosquitoes, which are primary vectors for diseases such as dengue, Zika, and chikungunya. By capturing these females before they lay eggs, the trap helps prevent the emergence of new mosquito generations.
Versatile Placement: Suitable for both urban and rural environments, the trap should be positioned in shaded, humid areas protected from wind and direct rain to maximize its efficacy.
Insecticide-Free Operation: The GAT® trap does not require chemical insecticides, making it an environmentally friendly option for mosquito control.
